The LeatherReport

by J.P. Rathburne for the San Francisco Spectrum

Hiding in a dark dungeon, wrapped in a mummy bag with blindfold, earplugs and sensory deprivation gear, you still could not escape the upcoming presidential election. Even International Mr. Leather Jason Hendrix got in a Montgomery Flagg moment when he posed for a “I want YOU to vote” poster.

After whatever results on Tuesday the 2nd, finally the hub-hub of the long Dore-Folsom-Castro-Halloween winds down, and we can catch our breath. But not for long because there are some important anniversaries and parties coming up that you do not want to miss.

San Francisco

IML 2004 Jason Hendrix poses for national leather community effort to get out the vote.

Coming up in November are lots of anniversaries and parties. Plenty of opportunities to meet people and do a lot of cruising. But leading up to the holiday season, there are also lots of opportunities to do something to make someone else’s life a little brighter. Consider picking up a toy for Mama’s Toy Drive or consider spending your Thanksgiving helping out Tenderloin Tessie’s. Our community is what we make of it—and some things are just too important to be left to someone else.

Turkey Undressing

Producer Mark Paladini announces “Mama’s Pluck The Turkey Toy Drive” on Sunday, November 14, between 5:00 and 8:00 pm at Daddy’s Bar (440 Castro St.). Bring a new and unwrapped toy for a chance to take the “Turkey Test” (which was unexplained), but then “pluck a turkey for a prize.” Please, no one alert the ASPCA.

In 2002 and 2003 over 5000 toys were collected in Mama’s Toy Drive, two underprivileged kids with HIV were sent to Camp Sunburst, and hundreds of music gift certificates were handed to families who otherwise could not afford to buy their teen a great holiday gift. Your can check out these causes yourself at www.sunburstprojects.org and www.operationdream.org.

Queer Leather Munch

Curious? Want to meet other people to discuss and socialize with? The San Francisco Queer Leather Munch meets the third Saturday of every month, gathering “anyone age 18 and over in the leather community of any gender or sexuality who identifies as queer, lesbian, gay, fag, dyke, genderqueer, genderfuckers, genderbenders, trans, MTF, FTM, bisexual, pansexual, omnisexual, questioning, intersexed.”

The next Munch is Saturday, November 20 from noon to 3:00 pm at the Three Dollar Bill Cafe, San Francisco LGBT Center (1st Floor, 1800 Market Street). For more info, contact boy-girl arielle at musicgeekchic@speakeasy.net.

Golden Gate Guards

By all accounts, the Golden Gate Guards had another successful run up in the Camp Mendocino woods. Their 18th annual gathering held the first weekend of October was called “Sordid Lives—Trailer Trash In Black Leather” and club secretary Keith Truitt reports a number of people attending for the first time.

The Guard will salute another milestone on Saturday, November 20 (7:00 - 9:30 pm) as they celebrate their 18th Anniversary at the Most Holy Redeemer Community Room (110 Diamond St., at 18th). The party is by invitation or overlay only (“overlay” usually refers to club colors or a recognized leather title) but you can get more information at www.ggguards.com .

San Francisco Leather Dyke Diva 2003 Sh`diva is throwing a community appreciation party as her way to thank you for supporting her during her title year as Dyke Diva 2003. Called a “devilicious opportunity for all of the devils and divas to bust out and play for the afternoon” red attire is encouraged. CLF Cancelled

In a statement dated October 15, the producers of the local feeder contests to American Brotherhood Weekend (ABW) contests announced that the event was cancelled. The short message cited sluggish advance ticket sales, a lack of interest and contestants. The contest was originally rescheduled from July 24 to October 23.

Tenderloin Tessie’s

For close to 30 years, Tenderloin Tessie Holiday Dinners, an all-volunteer organization, has worked hard to prepare, serve and feed the community of San Francisco on Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. They give a welcoming, comfortable, hot dinner to the elderly, disabled, displaced, families with children, and the homeless, always including the alone and lonely that do not have a family or a place to go and that are searching for a sense of compassion on these special holidays. For the past 10 years Tenderloin Tessie Holiday Dinners has been serving at the Unitarian Church (Franklin & Geary).

Many leather folk join the drag community, politicians and others to pull together and help serve these meals. The late Alan Selby was a regular volunteer every holiday. Please consider donating your time or money to help out those who are hit a little harder most during the holidays. Thanksgiving Dinner is Thursday, November 25, 11:00am to 4:00 pm. Christmas Dinner is Saturday, December 25, 11:00am to 4:00 pm. To help out, contact Tom Basch at tombasch@earthlink.net.
