Interim Executive Director Picked for the Russian River Chamber

by Nancy Norstad for the San Francisco Spectrum

Ernie Carpenter, split-time resident of Santa Rosa and Occidental, a four-term veteran of the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors, and an avid advocate of recycling and waste management, comes to the aid of the Russian River Chamber of Commerce on the suggestion old friend, 5th District Supervisor Mike Reilly. Ernie has volunteered to act as interim Executive Director, following Steve Fogle, until the chamber finds a permanent replacement.

Ernie moved to Sonoma County in 1969 after finishing an MSW graduate degree at Berkeley. He worked 8 years in non-profits; one of the first employees of Sonoma County's Social Advocates for Youth. As director, Ernie managed one of the largest funded non-profits in the county. Ernie later taught at the Junior College, and sat on the County Planning Commission prior to his 16-year stint as a supervisor.

“Mike Reilly thought of me for this position because he, too, wants to see the community involvement stay strong, the committees active." Ernie does not, however, want to consider the position permanent. His involvement in the county's waste management issues are too important, and he has no desire to try and do a full-time job with time limitations.

"The one thing that is the easiest part for me is to help the Chamber satisfy the County's requirements and to demand County support for the river. It's time. The Russian River's issues are big. The Low Flow issue in particular. This community has done an incredible job defending their rights and the environment. We need to make sure this level of commitment continues."

The Chamber's Eco-Tourism plan also appeals to Ernie. He has a history of support for the environment.
